Psychological tests are written, visual, or verbal mental evaluations administered to assess the cognitive and emotional functioning of children and adults. Psychological tests may be used to assess a variety of mental abilities and attributes, including achievement and ability, intelligence, personality, and neurological functioning. They can be used to determine personality strengths and weaknesses.
For children, ability, academic achievement, and intelligence tests may be used as tools in school placement, in determining the presence of giftedness, or in tracking intellectual development, in identifying learning disability, or a developmental delay. Intelligence testing may also be used in teens and young adults to determine vocational ability-career counseling
What are psychological assessments and evaluation:
Comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessments can answer a broad range of questions. A full evaluation will administer a variety of psychological and educational tests and rating scales to gather in-depth information about an individual’s strengths and weaknesses. It will also provide clarifying information about an individual’s broad functioning and to determine the presence of any possible disorders or diagnoses.
For children, the assessment process provides parents with valuable information about their child’s cognitive abilities, academic levels, and social and emotional health. The battery of tests is tailored specifically to each child’s needs and the referral concern. Assessment results can be used to provide information for school placement, in determining the presence of giftedness, in tracking intellectual developments, or identifying learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, or developmental delays.
What to expect:
Psychoeducational assessments will be completed in 3-4 sessions. Prior to the first session, the parent or individual will be sent several questionnaires to complete and bring with them to the initial interview. During the initial interview, in-depth background information will be collected about the child’s history and how the child is typically functioning at home and school. If necessary, rating scales will be given to the parents, teachers, and/or client to obtain additional information about social-emotional, behavioral, and adaptive functioning.
Individual testing will be completed in the second (and third if necessary) sessions. Play-based observations may also be conducted, especially for developmental and autism evaluations. Once all information is gathered (interview, testing, rating scales, and observations), a feedback session will review the results, conclusions, and recommendations from testing. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have, and you will be provided with a written report that can be shared with other treating providers, medical providers, and school personnel at your discretion.
